China, 28th Aug 2025 – Aaron Chavez, Director of International Schools for CIEO in China and Spokane-based chainsaw sculptor, is kicking off the new school year with a dragon roar, unveiling a hand-carved golden Chinese dragon at CIS Foshan to welcome students and staff back to campus.
Carved from a Banyan tree, the majestic dragon bust is located inside the CISFoshan school entrance, symbolizing luck, strength, and wisdom. “Dragons are powerful symbols in Chinese culture,” said Chavez. “This piece was created to inspire, bring luck, and remind our students that greatness is always within them.”
Chavez, who leads a network of international schools across China, brings over 25 years of experience as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. Known for his student-centered leadership and commitment to building cultures of excellence, he’s also an accomplished artist whose owl, bear, bigfoot, and eagle chainsaw sculptures have become well-known across the Pacific Northwest.
Beyond school leadership, Chavez is the founder of CarvingCamp.com, a hands-on woodcarving school based in Spokane, Washington. The camp, which teaches beginners and aspiring artists how to carve with confidence, will resume classes when he returns home.
