Captain Russ Beyer Named 2025 American Sailing Outstanding Instructor

Captain Russ Beyer, owner and head instructor of Miami Sailing School, has been recognized by American Sailing as a 2025 Outstanding Instructor. The annual recognition identifies the top 1% of active-status American Sailing instructors through an objective evaluation process based on verified student surveys. Beyer was one of only 30 instructors recognized for the 2025 award year.

Miami, Florida, United States, 14th Aug 2026 – Miami Sailing School announced that owner and head instructor Captain Russ Beyer has been recognized by American Sailing as a 2025 Outstanding Instructor, placing him among the top 1% of the organization’s active-status instructor community.

American Sailing determines the recognition through an objective evaluation process based on verified student surveys rather than nominations or applications. The methodology considers the number of surveys distributed to students, the number of completed surveys submitted, and each instructor’s average rating across completed evaluations.

For the 2025 recognition cycle, American Sailing reported 2,446 active-status instructors worldwide. Of those instructors, 850 met the eligibility requirements established through the organization’s selection criteria for courses taught. Thirty instructors were recognized as Outstanding Instructors, representing 27 cities and towns across 14 states, provinces, or territories, and two countries. Captain Russ Beyer was recognized as one of those instructors, representing Miami, Florida.

This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects the experiences of the students I have had the privilege to teach. My goal is not simply to help students earn certifications, but to help them develop the practical skills, sound judgment, and confidence required to safely assume command on their own.

Captain Russ serves as the owner and head instructor of Miami Sailing School, where he teaches American Sailing certification courses on the waters of Biscayne Bay. He brings approximately four decades of executive leadership experience, approximately two decades of sailboat ownership, and more than fifteen years as a licensed mariner to his work as a sailing instructor.

Beyer holds a United States Coast Guard 100-Ton Master, Near Coastal credential with Sail and Auxiliary Sail authority. He is also a Certified American Sailing Instructor and holds a Master of Business Administration. His sailing experience includes both monohull and catamaran sailing throughout South Florida, Biscayne Bay, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Miami Sailing School specializes in private and small-group sailing instruction for adults, allowing courses to be adapted to each student’s experience, objectives, and learning pace. Instruction aboard a Catalina 400 MKII cruising sailboat gives students hands-on experience in sail handling, navigation, docking, anchoring, vessel systems, crew coordination, seamanship, situational awareness, and command decision-making.

The school’s instructional approach is designed not only to help students meet certification requirements, but also to prepare them to apply their knowledge in real-world sailing situations. This includes students preparing for bareboat chartering, prospective sailboat owners, and sailors seeking the practical skills and judgment necessary for more independent cruising.

Miami Sailing School continues to offer American Sailing certification and practical sailing instruction in South Florida. Captain Russ Beyer’s 2025 Outstanding Instructor recognition reflects the school’s emphasis on individualized adult instruction, practical seamanship, sound decision-making, and preparing students to become safer and more capable independent sailors.
